Mountain Biking Trails

Local volunteer community group Bike Walk Brentwood (BWB) has partnered with the nonprofit Citizens for Brentwood Green Space (CBGS) to promote the development of a new mountain biking system at Marcella Vivrette Smith Park.  With the growing popularity of trails in Williamson County, the two groups teamed up to evaluate, design and build Brentwood’s first mountain bike trail in the popular park off Wilson Pike. Our goal is to provide the community with more outdoor recreation outlets. This new outdoor recreation amenity will serve the surrounding neighborhoods and the city of Brentwood. The trails will also allow the Brentwood High School and Middle School Mountain Bike League teams to thrive by providing a local practice and training location.

Donor Package

CBGS, 501(C)(3), will be accepting donations for this mountain biking project.

Smith Park’s mountain bike trail system, officially opened in April 2024, provides about 7 miles of singletrack that spans a full spectrum of difficulty—from beginner-friendly cross-country flow trails to more challenging and technical segments. The trails feature natural and constructed rock formations, climbs and descents, and connectors that weave through the park’s terrain, providing riders with a well-rounded experience. Because the system loops and interconnects, riding the full network sometimes means retracing parts of the course. For those considering a ride, it’s wise to check trail conditions before heading out (mud, closures, etc.), especially after rain, and to ride within your limits—there are offerings for all levels, but some sections can get technical.

Trail System

The new mountain bike trail system at Marcella Vivrette Smith Park offers something for every type of rider—whether you’re new to the sport or looking for a technical challenge. The roughly seven miles of interconnected trails blend scenic climbs, natural rock features, and historical storytelling woven through their names. Beginners can warm up on Hardscuffle Haul, a smooth, rolling trail that nods to Brentwood’s historic Hardscuffle community, or Kittie’s Crossing, a short loop with a stream crossing named in remembrance of Miss Kittie, one of the enslaved people who lived and worked on the Wilson Plantation. More experienced riders can test their skills on The Raven, Mississippian, or Boiling Spring Schoolmarm, all intermediate trails that highlight local history—from Native American heritage to early Brentwood landmarks like the Boiling Spring Academy.

For advanced riders, Stonebox and Freedom Pass deliver the most technical terrain. Stonebox features off-camber rocky singletrack inspired by the ancient stone caskets left behind by the Mississippian people, while Freedom Pass represents the difficult journey from slavery to freedom, honoring the 55 enslaved individuals once recorded on the Wilson property. Other highlights include Tower Trail, with views of the iconic WSM Radio Tower, and Harpeth Turnpike, a fast, flowing descent named after the historic roadway that once connected Brentwood and Arrington. All trails meet at Noble’s Corner (NoCo), the central hub of the system, named for one of the families tied to the land’s early history. Together, these thoughtfully designed trails showcase both the natural beauty and the deep cultural roots of Brentwood, offering riders an experience that’s physically rewarding and historically rich.
